I have owned guinea pigs for several years and am tired of taking them to vets that are less that confident in what they are doing. I searched for "guinea pig vet" in my area online and this was the first place that popped up. The reviews were fantastic, so I took my girl Kona, who had seen what was supposed to be a fantastic small animal vet and was still ill after 5 months and over $500 worth of treatment, to Adventure Animal Hospital as a last hope. There, I met Ann Evans, a British-trained rodentologist who figured out what was wrong with my poor girl. I returned recently for treatment and was disheartened to discover that my girl is likely a "stone pig," a guinea pig that is predisposed to getting bladder stones. Luckily, Ann has been running a cavy rescue for 25 years for guinea pigs that cannot be placed into homes because of their health problems, and has seen more than one stone pig. She walked me through all the steps I need to take in order to minimize the chances of Kona getting ill again. She loves the guinea pigs and does everything to make them comfortable when they are getting treated (including bringing her own romaine for them and a "guinea pig bed" so they don't have to sit on the steel exam table!!). Most important, I feel, is that she educates the owner on everything she is doing and why. She brings all of her materials with her and walks you through the diagnosis and treatment. She gives her personal email and phone number if you need to contact her outside of hospital hours. Before I went to see her, my girls couldn't live together because they fought. After Kona's initial treatment, she walked me through the steps to introduce them back together. Her knowledge and expertise in the area of guinea pig health and behavior is unparalleled! Her passion for cavies is further validated by the fact that she volunteers at Adventure Animal Hospital teaching the vet and his staff how to properly care for cavies. Even though he is not a rodent, she also will see and worms our rabbit. I will never take my small animals anywhere else!
